Freeing your time from IT

Am I paying too much for email and internet?

Case study: I need reliable email!

"Our email is so unreliable, we can go for a week without receiving any. Then we get 300 messages all at once! Is this normal?" said Judy Masters of Elysian Associates.

This was the problem that led our most recent customer to introduce themselves to us. We were horrified to hear that in this day and age such bad services still exist.

We started by addressing their immediate problem selecting one of our off-the-shelf web and email hosting packages.  As expected, our customer saw a dramatic improvement in performance and was delighted by this turnaround in service!

Next we discussed how they used the internet and what benefits having a web site would have.  They agreed a good web site would give potential customers useful  background information in terms of company maturity and stability.

How many times have you searched for a company's web site and can't find it?  What impression did it leave in your mind?!

If you find these articles entertaining and useful, please forward a copy to your friends colleagues, customers and suppliers; in fact, anyone who you think would also enjoy and benefit from receiving this information.

Yours Digitally,

Lyndon Wright

Internet costs: Are they too high?

Ever thought you may be paying too much for email and internet access? Don't know how to work it out or what other deal to go for?

Problem: I find that many of my customers are paying more than they should for their internet access. Email and the internet are essential to just about every Independent Services Professional's business. Not only that, many are using pay-as-you-go dial-up.  They would make a decent saving and have a much better service with a flat-rate deal. If you have a dial-up account for each computer in your office you are paying even more than you need to!

Solution: Check your costs and then find an alternative cheaper supplier. You may not realise it but moving from a pay-as-you-go dial-up to fixed-rate package could save up to £177 per month! And this is only dial-up. What about upgrading to broadband to really improve your productivity?! It is easier than you think!

Why haven't you change yet?: You are focusing on your business, finding customers and complete orders. You just accepted the cost, not aware there is an alternative. Here are the best deals we have researched at Buildandhost (as of 19/11/2003).

Taking payment through your web site

You thought it would cost too much to take orders for goods and services, and collect payment through your web site?! Think again!

Problem: Until recently it would cost thousands of pounds to set up an eCommerce site. A site capable of taking credit card payments and displaying your stock. So you never gave it a second thought.

Now you're thinking 'yes' but what about all that technology I need for my website to take those payments? It couldn't be simpler. PayPal has a button designer. You design a button for each of your products or services.  Like this:-

When your customer clicks the button the purchase is made! PayPal takes care of taking payment and informing you of the sale and where to send the goods. What could be simpler?!

Why hasn't it been done yet? Probably because you didn't know about it, and up until now it was incredibly expensive.

What you need to do: Here is the task list to get your products onto your site.

  • Next copy the button HTML from PayPal and paste it into your website payment page. (If you need help contact us on 01353 644090 and we'll do it for you.)

  • Upload you web site and that is it. You can now take orders and payment on line!

What kinds of payment can you take?: PayPal allows you to create buttons for:-

  • Reoccurring subscriptions - Including offer periods

  • Charity donations

  • Product buy now buttons

  • Shopping cart for the sale of multiple products

Give us a call if you would like us to add product and service to your web site now.

Virus what virus? Check your PC for Free!

Its in the news again... A new computer virus disguised as an electronic Christmas card is making the rounds

Problem: A virus is a small computer program that is written to copy itself from one computer to another. Some are malicious and will delete your files; others are not. The important thing is to keep your computer free from them. A malicious virus will cost you by destroying your company's information. If you do not have a backup, that could be devastating!

Solution: Install a virus scanner. This is a program that searched for viruses on your computer and disables them. PC-Cillion, McAfee, and other make virus software for just this purpose.  Once they are installed they just run in the background, keeping your machine free from virus attacks.

Why haven't you already solved this?: Just like most things it takes time to read all the literature and understand what you need to protect your computer from virus attacks. That is all valuable time you should be spending on your customers. Well the good news is, I have done that for you already.

What you need to do: Put your mind at rest. In your next coffee break click here to download and run this free virus scanner from the leaders Trend Micro. If your computers get the 'all clear' then you have piece of mind.  If it finds a virus and it can't clean it, give us a call 01353 644090.  We'll be happy to help you sort it out.

How to protect yourself in future: Buildandhost offer a range of virus protection solutions. Give us a call to discuss which is appropriate to protect your system.

What do I need a web site for?

Every body has one... well nearly. So why does every one need a web site?

Problem: In our modern age, people are always short of time. They want information to make decisions quick. When they are looking for new products or services they will often ask a friend for recommendations, look in the press and search through magazines for that speciality. What is certain is that once they have a name of a company that provides the desired service they are most likely to search for them on the Web too. What do you think they do if they can't find them?

Solution: A web site! Nothing new there.  Well here is where we need to understand what it is that our future customers are looking for. Most web sites miss that point about totally. A web site to land that customer needs to have the following structure:-

The problem: "Spending too much time on your PC?"

Identify who the product or service is for: "We work with Independent Service Professionals..."

Next identify what the solution and benefit is: "...to give them more time by optimising their IT"

Why isn't this done very often?: Simple. People have thought that the internet is something different. It has its own rules that seem to be totally against how things work in the real world. Remember the .com boom... and bust?! A web site is no different to a marketing brochure. It should follow the traditional marketing structure to make it a success. Flashy wizzy graphics do not bring you new business unless you sell Flashy wizzy graphics.  What sells is detailed information about what problem your product solves, how it solves it and what your customers need to do to get you to solve their problem.

What do I need to do: There is a free marketing plan work book that has a marketing template for Independent Service Professional's web sites. This is produced by www.actionplan.com marketing. You will be able to create your message and content for your site. You are now ready to create you own web site that will attract new customers.

Of course, if you would like us to this for you... Give us a ring 01353 644090.
